FloorFighterz is an alpha-built pixel game created for my second game project during Unit 7 of the Level 3 UAL Game Design & Animation Diploma at WestKings College.
It was my first pixel-style game built in Unreal Engine. The experience didn’t meet my expectations—I was disappointed. The unit theme focused on 2D retro games and consoles. We had to create a Game Design Document (GDD) and develop a platformer shooter/hack-n-slash concept.
Sprite design was challenging. Platform elements like floors and objects were manageable, but character design was tough. I created both male and female cop sprites, but only the male was used in the build. I also designed animations for idle, movement, combat, and jumping.
Implementing these in Unreal Engine was complex, especially following my teacher’s tutorial. The biggest challenge was rushing to finish before starting my Final Major Project, which had been delayed due to work experience. That disruption affected my learning and overall experience.
Despite the setbacks, I completed an alpha build. The game’s premise: you play as a cop investigating an abandoned house after a suspicious police report. The full plot is detailed in my GDD if you’d like to check it out.
